Alvvays, Ezra Collective, Mulatu Astatke, El Columpio Asesino, Los Bitchos, Folamour AV, Sen Senra, Death from Above 1979, Overmono live, JPEGMAFIA, Noname, Zea Mays and Ralphie Choo are also joining the festival’s ecosystem

As with every edition, Kobetamendi will be the festival’s natural stage, taking place on the 11th, 12th and 13th of July 2024

Today, from its nucleus Kobetamendi, Bilbao BBK Live unveils the first clues to its lineup; in doing so opening a window to its landscape, allowing us to get a glimpse of the artists who will tread its emblematic hillside. We can already recognise the outline of some of the bands and artists who will make up the ecosystem of Bilbao BBK Live next 11th, 12th, and 13th of July 2024. Up to 29 artists will be joining this initial lineup, creating a space where music combines with nature; an experience which can only be enjoyed from the inside.

Experience it and feel it, from the inside

The festival is rich in biodiversity and will host leading artists from contemporary music, intergenerational artists, up-and-coming voices, experimental projects and long-awaited comebacks. The most contemporary indie band from Canada, Arcade Fire, will resume its tremendous live performance after their success at the Cala Mijas and MEO Kalorama festivals last September and Jungle will start a funk party surrounded by native vegetation. We won’t have to go without the Bristol-born creators of trip-hop, Massive Attack, nor the maestros and creators of great electronic anthems from the 2000s, The Prodigy and Underworld. The Texan trio Khruangbin, which means plane in Thai, will take attendees on the most psychedelic trip of their lives and the Australians, Parcels, will shatter the boundaries between indie and electronica. But this is still only a first glimpse of the lineup, from the inside.

From this first instalment we can see UK talent will be represented: In the lineup, Anglo-Saxon music’s up-and-coming groups Overmono live and Folamour in AV format will be the flag bearers for eclectic electronica, Los Bitchos with their 70s and 80s cumbia, the mellow tones of the London based New Zealander Jordan Rakei, the UK Jazz five-piece Ezra Collective, combining soul, hip-hop, calypso and afrobeat, as well as Floating Points’ immense live performance musical repertoire. What’s more, the highly versatile JPEGMAFIA and his provocative avant-garde rap, Alvvays’ catchy melodies and the creative rapper from Chicago, Noname, will visit Basque soil for the first time.

The festival hosts a whole pallet of greens, lush textures and eloquent sounds, that’s why it is essential to shine the spotlight on Mulatu Astatke, also known as the father of ethio-jazz; he will be representing the front-line of world music directly from Kobetamendi. Along the same musical lines, Cymande will be there; the band which was formed in the 70s by various musicians from Jamaica and French Guiana are not the most frequent in giving concerts, yet Bilbao BBK Live is the exception. As is Death from Above 1979, infrequent but always true to their essence; they will be performing their hard rock at the festival.

The diversity of the lineup isn’t lacking the national representation necessary to understand the festival’s balanced atmosphere: a compulsory stop on El Columpio Asesino’s farewell tour, the Madrid-born supernova Ralphie Choo who has won over Rosalia, the honest and personal lyrics from Jimena Amarillo, Catalonian Queralt Lahoz’s Andalusian roots, the puñao’ de sensaciones (handful of sensations) that Sen Senra arouses with his bedroom pop, Derby Motoreta’s Burrito Kachimba’s kinkidelia (a rethinking of Andalusian rock with psychedelic touches), and Nerve Agent’s punk metal.

The artists with Eusko label are part of the festival’s DNA; local stars such as Zea Mays, the character, energy and hit-making machine that is Shinova or the melodic sentimentalism of Airu will also be present at the Kobetamendi peak.

A calibrated ecosystem

Bilbao BBK Live is much more than music; it’s a parallel world which will immerse its attendees into their surroundings over the course of 3 days, blending into the great living machine which can only be understood from the inside; from its infinite possibilities, parallel routes and alternative paths that each attendee chooses to embark on during this experience.
