Festival
Cala Mijas Festival presents its full lineup and announces the daily programming
Moderat, Belle & Sebastian, Siouxsie, José González performing ‘Veneer’, Duki, Arca, Lil Yachty, Pabllo Vittar, Idles, and Lori Meyers join the already confirmed Florence + The Machine, Arcade Fire, and The Strokes
La Caleta, the festival’s electronic space, is back with James Holden, Nicola Cruz, Call Super, and Helena Hauff among others
The festival kicks off on the last day of August with one of the past decade’s most relevant bands, Arcade Fire. This will be one of the few opportunities to see them this year, as they will only perform at two festivals around the world. That day will also feature Idles, a highly-anticipated ethical and political punk rock band, the former head of The Banshees and british legend Siouxsie, the contemporary electronic music of Moderat, the irreverent and brazen Brit SLOWTHAI, and Foals and their enthusiastic hedonism. Belgian artist of Arab descent, Tamino, will bring musical beauty to the festival’s first sunset with Radiohead member Colin Greenwood among his bandmates. Also joining the party is Brazilian drag queen Pabllo Vittar and her sexual liberation speech that will make all of Sonora Mijas dance to her massive queer pop rhythm. Spanish talent will be represented by Amaia’s angelic voice, Cupido‘s love and heartbreak songs, Cala Vento’s guitars from Montgrí, Juicy Bae‘s frantic and introspective rhymes, Vera Fauna‘s Sevillian indie pop and putting the icing on the day with the wildest of parties is the neo-post-punk of VVV [Trippin’you].
Friday, September 1 will be led by The Strokes‘ New York guitars. Their live performance at the festival will perfectly celebrate what they are: one of the most important rock bands since their start in the 2000s. American rapper and creator of one of 2023’s most interesting albums, Lil Yachty will add a discordant touch to the second day, alongside Lori Meyers’ generational anthems, British singer-songwriter Charlie Cunningham, Mexican Kevin Kaarl, and Parisian duo Acid Arab‘s oriental house. The duo Junior Boys’ electronic pop, Napoli-based Nu Genea‘s funk, disco, and electronic music, the electro-pop of Playback Maracas, and Compro Oro‘s fierce tambourine and melodies will also sound that day. Rounding out the day are Amyl & The Sniffers, Cariño, and Delaporte.
Cala Mijas’ last day rests on the shoulders of big names: the iconic and magical British band Florence + The Machine, the internationally adored Glasgow band Belle & Sebastian, José González celebrating the 20th anniversary of his debut album ‘Veneer’, as well as the recently crowned king of Argentine trap, Duki, who will arrive to Mijas after selling out two shows at Wizink and two shows at Palau Sant Jordi. The French electronics of The Blaze, Arca’s vindictive multiperformance Arca, Metronomy and their bubbly electro-pop, and Ethel Cain the brilliant creator of Preacher’s Daughter and Florence Welch’s friend and collaborator. Mixing traditional styles from throughout Spain with more modern sounds will be done by Baiuca, La Plazuela, and Judeline while cheeky punk will be represented by La Elite. Spanish talent is embodied on the last day by Ballena and Niños Luchando.
Cala Mijas’ dance floor already has its own name. The 2022 debut edition of Cala Mijas brought the summer rave with it, and everyone was absolutely raving about it. The space has a unique identity, it’s a 360 experience where you visit a dreamlike universe in surround sound with visual chromotherapy, where artists and attendees share the limelight.
“What happens on a dance floor is something magical: you can fall in love, you can get your heart broken, you can flirt, you can dance, you can feel totally alone or completely surrounded.”
Cormac (Friday, September 1, La Caleta)
This dance floor surrounded by eucalyptus trees will host many live ambient experiences: visionary James Holden’s newest album, Nicola Cruz‘s night party, Berlin Panorama Bar (Berghain) residents and LGTBIQ+ activists Prosumer and Cormac, in addition to the talented Italian psychedelic DJ Budino and Andalusian Buganvilia. Call Super could not miss out after their overwhelming success at La Caleta last year. Also not wanting to miss out is master of Detroit Palms Trax, new face on the British scene Saoirse, Yung Prado‘s high-altitude mixes, the fusion sounds of DJ Topanga Kiddo, and Montreal-based Ouri live. Axel Boman will perform his next album at La Caleta, Ketiov and the music editor at NTS, Moxie, will join together at La Caleta in a completely unexpected b2b, where in different slots British I. Jordan, Tom VR,and Donostiarra-native Alvva will also play. The festival and La Caleta will have an iconic closing ceremony master: Helena Hauff. Her irresistible set will put the finishing touch on the festival’s second edition.
Cala Mijas maintains its commitment to people and the planet being that the organising entity behind the festival has recently received the B Corp certification, which recognises its compliance with high standards in terms of social and environmental performance, transparency, and corporate responsibility.
But this isn’t over yet, the festival’s day programming is still to be announced, which will take the daytime party to Mijas Costa. Passes will continue to be sold on the festival’s website and on seetickets.com/es, with the possibility to pay in instalments and access to camping. Day tickets will be available starting next Wednesday, March 29 at the promotional price of €65.
