Lila Downs / Mulatu Astatke

Lila Downs (who has already performed twice). The Mexican singer, winner of a Grammy and 6 Latin Grammys, comes to Lanuza on Sunday 14th to present her latest work, ‘La Sánchez’, and also recall the popular songs from her repertoire: ‘Son del chile frito’, ‘Cariñito’, ‘Cucurrucucucú’ and ‘Cumbia del Mole’. Lila Downs, with one of the most powerful and unique voices in the world, sings stories against social injustice, and stories of Latin American women, especially indigenous and working women. The same day will feature another key figure in cultural fusion, Mulatu Astatke. The Ethiopian multi-instrumentalist is considered the progenitor of ethio-jazz. He trained in the 1960s in London, where he studied clarinet and piano. He went on to New York and Boston, becoming the first African student to earn a doctorate from Berklee College of Music.
